In 2006, while creating a program to factor positive integers, I realized that I had no idea how to teach a computer to calculate the composite factors. Three days later, an idea came to me: my fifth grade experiences with Alien Arithmetic and using base 4 in a color selector provided the inspiration of Mixed Base Arithmetic which I now realize is related to Mixed Radix Numeral Systems. Come to my session, to learn how it was applied to the factoring problem, to do mixed based counting, and then to do conversions. Receive some homework problems with answers to the odds provided on the last page.
Prerequisite or Corequisite: Knowledge of counting in different base counting systems is helpful.
Takeaways: A different technique to solve a programming problem that could be applied to other problems. A fun project for a programming / math class or club.
Background: Laura Shears Meyer was a math professor and tutor with software and web development hobbies. She likes to create handy tools, make programs that help students learn and practice concepts, and give teachers interactive visual aids for their lectures.
